He lived from 1921 to 1988. He was a socialist, which means he believed in fairness for all people. He also worked as an academic, a person who studies and teaches at a university. Williams wrote many books about politics, the media, and literature. His ideas helped start a new way of studying the world called cultural studies. People all over the world have read his work in many different languages. In the United Kingdom alone, about 750,000 copies of his books were sold.

Williams grew up in a village called Pandy in Wales. His father worked for the railway. The village was a place where people had strong views about how to run a country. As a teenager, Williams became interested in world events. He joined a group called the Left Book Club to learn more. In 1937, he went to a youth conference in Geneva, Switzerland. While there, he saw a book by Karl Marx for the first time. This was a very important moment for his future ideas.

When he was a student at Cambridge University, a big war began. Williams had to stop his studies to join the British Army in 1940. He served in the Royal Corps of Signals at first. Later, he became an officer in a tank unit. He saw heavy fighting in places like Normandy, Belgium, and Germany. He even saw the results of bombing in the city of Hamburg. After the war ended, he went back to Cambridge to finish his degree in 1946. He later earned a higher doctorate from the same university in 1969.

After the war, Williams spent many years teaching adults. He taught English and drama in places like Oxford and East Sussex. During this time, he began writing his own books. In 1958, he published a very famous book called Culture and Society. In this book, he used a new phrase called "structure of feeling." He also wrote a book called Keywords in 1976. This book looked at 110 different words to see how their meanings change. He wanted to show how words like "work" or "freedom" connect to our lives.

Williams eventually returned to teach at Cambridge University as a professor. He was a very busy man who wrote about many things. He wrote about how television and technology affect our society. He also wrote about the relationship between the countryside and the city. His work was a way to look at how culture is made and shared. He believed that the way we live is shaped by many different social forces. Even today, his ideas help people understand the world around them.
