He was born in Oxford in 1924 to Methodist parents. His father was a poet named Edward John Thompson. Thompson's life changed during the Second World War. He left school in 1941 to fight in the army. He served in a tank unit during the Italian campaign. Later, he returned to Corpus Christi College to study history. He graduated in 1946 and began his career.

Thompson is famous for a new way of looking at the past. He called this method "history from below."

Most history books focus on kings or famous leaders. Thompson wanted to look at regular, everyday people instead. He studied the lives of workers and their cultures. He looked at old songs, letters, and workshop customs. He wanted to rescue the stories of forgotten people. He believed their lives and beliefs were very important.

In 1963, Thompson published his most famous book. It was called "The Making of the English Working Class." This massive book was over 800 pages long. It looked at the lives of workers in the late 1700s and early 1800s. He wrote this while working at the University of Leeds. The book changed how people study social history. It showed how workers formed their own groups and ideas. Many students still read this book in university today.

Thompson also studied how time changed human life. He wrote a book about time and work in 1967. Before the Industrial Revolution, people followed natural rhythms. They used the sun and the seasons to guide them. However, new factories required very strict clock-time. This helped owners monitor workers more closely. Thompson argued that this new discipline was a tool for control. This idea helped people understand how modern work began.

Throughout his life, Thompson was a man of strong ideas. He was a socialist and a peace campaigner. He helped start groups like the Communist Party Historians Group. He also helped launch journals like "The New Reasoner." In 1960, this became the "New Left Review." Thompson even left his job at the University of Warwick to protest. He did not want the school to become too much like a business. He remained a teacher and a thinker until the end. He died in 1993.
