He was born in Oxford in 1924. He was a writer and a peace campaigner. During World War II, he served in a tank unit. After the war, he studied history at Cambridge.

Thompson changed how we study the past. He used a way called "history from below." This means he focused on regular people. He did not just write about kings or leaders. He looked at the lives of workers. He studied their songs, letters, and customs.

In 1963, he wrote a very big book. It was called "The Making of the English Working Class." This book was over 800 pages long. It told the story of workers in the 1700s and 1800s. He also wrote about how clocks changed life. He said factory work made people follow strict time. Thompson stayed active in his work for many years. He even left his university job to protest. He wanted to keep learning and teaching in his own way.
