He was born on August 24, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York. His parents came from different places. His father, Eddie, was born in Austria-Hungary. His mother, Jenny, came from a city in Eastern Siberia. They worked in factories to support their family. During the Great Depression, they even ran a small candy store. They did not have many books at home. To help him, they bought him a set of books by Charles Dickens.

As a young man, Zinn learned about fairness through his work. He became an apprentice shipfitter at the New York Navy Yard at age 18. He and other young workers formed the Apprentice Association. They wanted better pay and safer places to work. Zinn served as the Activities Director for this group. This experience helped him understand why labor unions are important. Later, he joined the Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked as a bombardier in the 490th Bombardment Group.

War changed how Zinn saw the world. During the war, he dropped bombs on places like Berlin and Hungary. In April 1945, he dropped napalm bombs on a town called Royan in France. Years later, he went back to research what happened there. He found that the bombing killed more than a thousand French civilians. He also studied a raid on the city of Plzeň in Czechoslovakia. Official records said only five people died in that raid. However, Zinn found that several hundred Czech citizens actually died.

He taught at Spelman College in Atlanta for several years. In 1964, he began teaching at Boston University. He taught there for 24 years before he retired. His classes on civil liberties were very popular. Sometimes, as many as 400 students joined his classes each semester.

Zinn wanted to tell history in a new way. He felt many books left out important stories. In 1980, he published his most famous book, "A People's History of the United States." This book tells about the struggles of Native Americans and enslaved people. It also shares the stories of workers and women. He wrote a version for younger readers in 2007. A group called the Zinn Education Project now helps teachers use his work. Zinn died of a heart attack in 2010 at age 87.
