He was born in Bondi, Australia, on 9 October 1939. His family had many different roots, including German, English, and Irish ancestry. Pilger moved to Britain in 1962 to start his career. He used his skills to report on many difficult things happening around the world. He wanted to show people how powerful countries often treated others in unfair ways. His work was meant to bring attention to human rights and justice.

Pilger worked in many different ways to share his news. He started as a copy boy for a newspaper in Sydney. Later, he became a reporter and a chief foreign correspondent for the Daily Mirror. He also made more than 50 documentaries, which are films about real life. One of his first films was called The Quiet Mutiny in 1970. This film looked at the lives of American soldiers during the Vietnam War. He also wrote columns for magazines like the New Statesman for many years. He used both writing and film to reach people everywhere.

His career saw many big moments and travels. In 1968, he was in Los Angeles and saw Robert F. Kennedy being assassinated. He traveled to many war zones like Vietnam, Cambodia, and Biafra. In 1979, he and his team went into Cambodia after the Pol Pot regime ended. They took photos and made reports that no one else had seen yet. These reports were published in the Daily Mirror and sold out quickly. This work helped people see the true situation in that country.

Pilger's work had a very real impact on the world. After his film Year Zero about Cambodia was shown, people wanted to help. About $45 million was raised through donations to help the people there. This included almost £4 million raised by schoolchildren in the UK. This money paid for life-saving drugs like penicillin and new clothes. Pilger also won many big prizes for his work. He won Britain's Journalist of the Year Award in 1967 and 1979. He even won a BAFTA, which is a major award for film makers.

Because he told hard truths, not everyone agreed with him. Some people in politics and other newspapers criticized his views very strongly. Some thought his reporting was too one-sided or sensational. However, others saw him as a brave person who spoke for those without a voice. In 2006, a poll named him one of the heroes of all time. He remained a very influential figure in journalism until he passed away in 2023. His life shows how one person can use stories to change how we see the world.
