He was known for being a foreign correspondent, which is a reporter who works in different countries. Fisk focused much of his work on the Middle East. He was an expert in this region because he spoke Arabic. This skill allowed him to talk directly to local people. He did not just watch from a distance. Instead, he traveled to places where many difficult things were happening. He wanted to tell the truth about what he saw with his own eyes.

Fisk had a very specific way of working in the field. He often criticized what he called "hotel journalism." This is when reporters stay in safe hotels instead of meeting people on the ground. Fisk believed that to tell a real story, you must leave the hotel. He went into war zones like Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq. During the Iran-Iraq War, he was so close to heavy artillery that he lost some of his hearing. He even faced danger from crowds while reporting in Pakistan. He always tried to see the world through the eyes of ordinary people.

His career began with local newspapers in England. He worked for the Newcastle Chronicle and the Sunday Express. Later, he joined The Times as a correspondent. He worked in Northern Ireland and Portugal before moving to the Middle East in 1976. In 1989, he moved to The Independent. This newspaper was where he did much of his most famous work. He spent many years living in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. His long career allowed him to witness many historical changes firsthand.

Fisk was a very successful writer and earned many honors. He was named the Press Awards Foreign Reporter of the Year seven times. He also wrote several important books about history and conflict.

One of his most famous books is called The Great War for Civilisation. He was also known for interviewing Osama bin Laden three times between 1993 and 1997. People even used his name as a verb. To "fisk" someone means to argue against their points one by one. This shows how much people noticed his style of writing.

His life was shaped by his family and his education. He was born in Maidstone, Kent, to William and Peggy Fisk. His father was a man who refused to kill a soldier during the First World War. This choice of his father clearly influenced Robert. He studied Latin and Linguistics at Lancaster University. Later, he earned a PhD in political science from Trinity College Dublin in 1983. His studies helped him understand the deep roots of many global conflicts. He died in October 2020, leaving behind a massive body of work.
