Her stories helped people understand the struggles of those living in conflict.

Anna did not just write from a desk. She traveled to many places to find the truth. She visited hospitals and refugee camps in Chechnya and Ingushetia. There, she interviewed people who were hurt or lost their homes. In 1999, she even helped move elderly people to safety during a bombing in Grozny. She wrote about many hard things. She described how military forces and local leaders treated people unfairly. Her writing helped people see the human side of these big events.

Her life began in New York City in 1958. Her parents were diplomats for the Soviet Union.

Anna grew up mostly in Moscow. She studied journalism at Moscow State University and graduated in 1980. Before she was a famous reporter, she worked in many different jobs. Being a journalist like Anna was a very hard job. She faced many dangers because of her writing. Russian military forces once arrested her and held a mock execution. She was also poisoned while flying to help with a crisis in Beslan. She survived that event, but it was very serious. Anna wrote books like "Putin's Russia" to explain her views. Sadly, Anna was killed in her apartment building in Moscow. This happened on October 7, 2006. This date was also the birthday of Russian president Vladimir Putin. Her death caused people all over the world to pay attention.
