As a reporter, she covered many serious events. She reported on the Second Chechen War and large floods. In 2004, she was at the Beslan school hostage crisis. This was a very sad event where 334 people died. She said it was the worst thing that ever happened to her. Later, she moved to Moscow to work with Kremlin reporters.

Her family history is very interesting and goes back many years. She was born in Krasnodar in 1980 to an Armenian family.

Her parents were descendants of Armenian refugees from the Ottoman Empire. During World War II, her family was moved to the Urals. Her father was born in Yekaterinburg. Her mother was born in Sochi. Simonyan says she feels both Armenian and Russian. Her family even owns a restaurant in Sochi.

She reached a high position in news at a young age. In 2005, she became the head of RT when she was only 25.

At that time, RT had about 300 journalists. Simonyan said she wanted the station to show the Russian view of the world. She wanted it to be like the BBC or CNN. However, many people in the West say her news is biased. They believe the station does not always tell the whole truth. In 2013, she also became the leader of Rossiya Segodnya.

Because of her work, many countries have taken action against her. These actions are called sanctions.

The European Union and the United Kingdom sanctioned her in 2022 and 2023. They did this because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The United States also sanctioned her in 2024. They said she was involved in trying to influence elections. These sanctions mean she cannot enter certain countries easily. Her work remains a major part of how Russia talks to the world.
