Novaya Gazeta is an independent newspaper from Russia.

It focuses on investigative reporting about politics and social issues. This means the writers look for deep truths about how a country is run. They often cover topics like corruption and how leaders use their power. The paper is important because it shares stories that might otherwise be hidden. It helps people understand the real state of affairs in their own land.

Working as an investigative journalist can be a very hard job. The newspaper has faced many serious challenges to keep its work going. Since the year 2000, seven journalists have been murdered because of their investigations. These people included Yuri Shchekochikhin and Anna Politkovskaya.

The paper has also dealt with legal battles and digital attacks. In 2010, hackers launched a massive cyber attack on their website. The server received 1.5 million connections every second, which took the site offline.

A group of former journalists started the paper in 1993.

At first, it was called Daily New Gazette. Mikhail Gorbachev helped the team get started in those early years. He used money from his 1990 Nobel Peace Prize to buy the paper's first computers. This shows how important the mission was from the very beginning. The staff even owns most of the company today.

Many specific events have shaped the history of this news outlet. In 2002, a court ordered the paper to pay 15 million rubles. This was a huge amount of money for a Russian newspaper at that time. Later, in 2021, the editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov won the Nobel Peace Prize.

He shared this honor with Maria Ressa for protecting freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is the right to share ideas without being stopped by the government.

Today, the newspaper looks very different than it did in the 1990s. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, things became much more difficult. The government used censorship to try to control what the paper could say.

Because of this, the paper launched a new version called Novaya Gazeta Europe. This new part of the paper works from Riga, Latvia. They also have offices in Germany and Paris to stay safe.
