It serves as a newspaper of record for the country. This means it provides important news about politics and the world. The paper is known for its liberal views on many topics. It speaks up for civil liberties and rights for women and LGBT people. This often puts the paper in conflict with conservative leaders. For example, it faced challenges from the PiS government between 2015 and 2023. Even with these fights, it remains a leading voice in Polish life.

The paper works by sending out news to many different cities.

It has local editions for places like Warsaw, Kraków, and Gdańsk. Journalists use investigative journalism to find hidden truths. This is a way of working where reporters look deeply into secrets. They study big events to find out what really happened. This work helps shape what the public thinks about important issues. Today, many people read the news through digital subscriptions on their computers.

The history of the paper began during a time of great change.

It was launched on May 8, 1989. It grew out of the Round Table Agreement in Poland. The paper was created to help the Solidarity movement. It was the first legal paper not controlled by the government since the 1940s. Founders like Andrzej Wajda and Zbigniew Bujak helped start it. Adam Michnik became the first editor-in-chief after being chosen by Lech Wałęsa.

There are many interesting facts about the paper's growth.

The very first issue had only 150,000 copies. It was expensive because the government made paper hard to find. By the 1990s, the paper reached a peak of 500,000 copies. In 2003, it was the second best-selling paper in Poland. By 2020, it was the 10th most read newspaper in all of Europe. It has also reported on famous scandals like the Rywin affair in 2002.

You can see how the paper connects to the modern world.

Just like how people use apps today, the paper moved online. In 2020, the office space in Warsaw became much smaller. This happened because many journalists started working remotely from home. This is a common way that many modern companies work now. The paper still prints for many people, but digital news is growing. It shows how even old traditions can change with new technology.
