Gazeta Wyborcza is a major nationwide daily newspaper in Poland.

It serves as a newspaper of record for the country. This means it provides essential news about politics, international events, and general topics. The publication is known for its left-liberal perspective. It often acts as a leading voice for civil liberties and social issues. This includes topics like women's rights and LGBT rights. Because of these views, the paper has faced conflicts with conservative governments. For example, it clashed with the PiS-led government between 2015 and 2023.

The newspaper's history began during a period of massive political change.

It was launched on May 8, 1989. Its creation resulted from the Polish Round Table Agreement. This agreement was made between the communist government and political opponents. The paper was founded as a press organ for the Solidarity movement. It was the first legal newspaper in Poland not controlled by the government since the late 1940s. Founders included Andrzej Wajda, Aleksander Paszyński, and Zbigniew Bujak. Adam Michnik was appointed as the first editor-in-chief by Lech Wałęsa.

The early years of the paper were shaped by political shifts.

Initially, it was meant to serve the Solidarity movement during the 1989 elections. It even used the motto, "There's no freedom without Solidarity." However, the political landscape changed quickly. In September 1990, Lech Wałęsa revoked the paper's right to use the Solidarity logo. This happened during a political conflict known as the "War on the Mountain." The paper transitioned from a movement organ to an independent, center-left publication. This shift caused some former associates to leave the editorial office.

Gazeta Wyborcza is famous for its investigative journalism. This is a method where reporters deeply research secrets to find the truth. These investigations have shaped public opinion in Poland. One major event was the Rywin affair in 2002. In this case, a producer named Lew Rywin allegedly tried to bribe Adam Michnik. The goal was to influence media laws to benefit a specific company. Another report, called the "Skin Hunters" scandal, revealed wrongdoing in an ambulance service. The paper also exposed the PKN Orlen scandal in 2004 involving government officials. These reports often led to official parliamentary inquiries.

In terms of scale, the paper has seen massive changes in its reach.

At its peak in the 1990s, circulation exceeded 500,000 copies. In 2003, it was the second best-selling newspaper in Poland. By 2004, weekend circulation reached as high as 686,000 copies. In 2020, it was ranked as the 10th most read newspaper in Europe. However, print numbers have declined significantly over the years. By 2021, average daily circulation was around 62,000. This decline reflects a broader global shift toward digital media.

The newspaper operates through a complex structure of local and digital services. It publishes daily local editions for many major Polish cities. These include Warsaw, Kraków, Gdańsk, and Wrocław. It also provides thematic supplements on specialized topics. These supplements cover areas like law, economy, education, and health. Examples include titles like Duży Format and Wysokie Obcasy.

Today, the paper relies heavily on its digital version. It offers subscription services for readers to access news online.

Modern technology has also changed how the journalists work. In September 2020, the newspaper changed its operating mode. The editorial office space in Warsaw decreased by 40 percent. This happened because many journalists began working remotely. Some employees work from home, while others work from the office. This change shows how the newspaper has adapted to the digital age. It remains a central part of the Polish media system, connecting traditional print with modern digital communication.
