Kwaśniewski's political path involved navigating the end of communist rule. He participated in the Round-Table negotiations to help change the government. As the PZPR was dissolved, he helped form new political groups. He was a founding member of the Social Democratic Party of the Republic of Poland. He also helped found the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) in 1991. In the 1995 presidential election, he faced the incumbent Lech Wałęsa. Kwaśniewski won with 51.7 percent of the votes in a run-off. He was later re-elected in 2000 in a single round of voting.

His presidency focused on modernizing the Polish state and economy. One major achievement was the drafting of a new constitution in 1997. This document replaced the modified rules left over from the communist era. He also guided Poland through major international integrations. Poland joined the NATO military alliance in 1999. Later, in 2004, Poland became a member of the European Union. These moves connected Poland more closely to Western Europe. The economy also grew rapidly during his ten years in office. Poland's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) doubled during this decade.

Kwaśniewski was also active in regional diplomacy and security. He helped sign a treaty of friendship with Lithuania in 1997. He worked to support Ukraine's progress in Europe as well. In 2004, he acted as a mediator during the Orange Revolution in Ukraine. This role helped facilitate a peaceful solution to a political conflict. Following the 11 September 2001 attacks, he organized a conference in Warsaw. This event focused on regional cooperation to fight international terrorism. He also helped lead efforts to fight organized crime in Central Europe.

Some aspects of his presidency were controversial and faced criticism. In 2014, it was revealed he had agreed to host a secret CIA site in 2003. The site was used for activities that were kept very secret. He also faced scrutiny regarding his use of presidential pardons. In 2005, he granted clemency to Zbigniew Sobotka, a former deputy minister. He also pardoned Peter Vogel, a man involved in a high-profile legal case. Additionally, he declined to testify before parliamentary commissions regarding certain investigations. These moments remain part of the historical debate regarding his leadership.

Despite these controversies, Kwaśniewski's impact on Poland remains substantial. A 2020 poll suggested many Poles viewed him as a highly effective president. His era saw the successful transition to a market economy. He helped establish the legal and political framework used by Poland today. His work helped move the nation from a communist past into a modern European future. He remains a central figure in the history of post-1989 Poland. His legacy is tied to the growth and international standing of the country.
