Józef Adam Zygmunt Cyrankiewicz was a central figure in the political history of 20th-century Poland. He served as the premier of the Polish People's Republic during two distinct periods. His first term lasted from 1947 to 1952. He then returned to the premiership for 16 years between 1954 and 1970.

Cyrankiewicz was a member of the Polish Socialist Party (PPS) before becoming a Communist politician after 1948. His long career reflects the complex shifts in Polish governance during the communist era.

Cyrankiewicz was born in 1911 in Tarnów. At that time, the city was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father, Józef, was a lieutenant in the Polish Armed Forces and a local activist. His mother, Regina, owned several sawmills.

After attending Jagiellonian University, he began his political life in Kraków. In 1935, he became the secretary for the Kraków branch of the Polish Socialist Party. This early involvement in politics set the stage for his future leadership roles.

During World War II, Cyrankiewicz joined the Polish resistance. He was active in the Union of Armed Struggle, which later became the Armia Krajowa. In the spring of 1941, the Gestapo captured him. He was imprisoned at Montelupich before being sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

He arrived at Auschwitz on 4 September 1942 with the registration number 62,933. As the Soviet front approached, he was transferred to Mauthausen. He was eventually liberated by the US Army.

Post-war history contains significant controversy regarding his time in Auschwitz. Communist propaganda claimed he organized a resistance movement among socialist prisoners. However, modern historians believe these claims were exaggerated.

Historians note a different, more controversial action. Cyrankiewicz refused an appeal for the death sentence of Witold Pilecki. Pilecki was a Home Army resistance fighter who had infiltrated Auschwitz. Cyrankiewicz suggested that Pilecki be treated harshly as an enemy of the state.

Cyrankiewicz rose to power through political maneuvering and party shifts. In 1946, he became secretary-general of the PPS central executive committee. A split occurred within the PPS between his faction and that of Edward Osóbka-Morawski. While Osóbka-Morawski wanted to form a united front against communism, Cyrankiewicz argued for supporting the communists.

This division allowed the Communist Polish Workers' Party (PPR) to gain influence. In 1948, the PPS merged with the PPR to form the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR). Cyrankiewicz remained premier during this transition.

His second period in office was marked by intense political upheaval. In 1956, following Nikita Khrushchev's "secret speech," riots broke out across Poland. Cyrankiewicz responded with harsh rhetoric against the protesters. He later faced criticism for his actions during the 1970 demonstrations on the coast.

During these protests, he ordered troops to fire on the people. This event resulted in 42 deaths and more than 1,000 injuries. Following this, he stepped down as premier and became the Chairman of the Council of State.

As Chairman of the Council of State from 1970 to 1972, he held a position equivalent to a president. Although this was the highest state post, he was effectively in semi-retirement.

Throughout his life, he received numerous high-level honors. These included the Order of the Cross of Grunwald and the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. He also received many foreign awards, such as the Order of the Aztec Eagle. Cyrankiewicz died in 1989, shortly before the communist regime in Poland collapsed. In 2003, he was posthumously charged regarding his role in the judicial murder of Witold Pilecki.
