Wojciech Witold Jaruzelski was a central figure in 20th-century Polish history. He was a military general and a high-ranking politician. From 1981 to 1989, he served as the de facto leader of the Polish People's Republic. He held several major titles during this era. He was the First Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party. He also served as Prime Minister from 1981 to 1985. Later, he was the Chairman of the Council of State from 1985 to 1989.

He was the last leader of the Polish People's Republic. His life spanned the most turbulent years of the Communist era in Eastern Europe.

Jaruzelski was born on 6 July 1923, in Kurów, Poland. He was born into a family of Polish nobility, or gentry. His childhood was interrupted by the start of World War II in 1939. Germany invaded Poland, and the Soviet Union invaded sixteen days later. This resulted in the partition of Poland into German and Soviet zones. Jaruzelski and his family were captured by the Red Army. They were deported to Siberia in June 1941. During this time, he was separated from his father. He was assigned to forced labour in the Siberian wilderness.

While cleaning forests, he developed photokeratitis. This is a condition caused by too much light. It damaged his eyes permanently. Because of this, he wore dark protective sunglasses for the rest of his life.

After his time in Siberia, Jaruzelski joined the military. In 1943, he joined the First Polish Army, which was formed under Soviet command. He fought on the Eastern Front against Nazi Germany. He participated in the liberation of Warsaw and the Battle of Berlin. By the end of the war in 1945, he had reached the rank of lieutenant. After the war, he continued his military education. He graduated from the Polish Higher Infantry School and the General Staff Academy. He rose through the ranks to become a general. He eventually became the Polish Minister of Defence in 1968.

Jaruzelski's political rise was closely tied to the Communist Party. He joined the Polish United Workers' Party in 1948. He became a member of the Central Committee in 1960. As Minister of Defence, he held immense power over the military. In 1968, he ordered the Polish 2nd Army to invade Czechoslovakia. This military occupation lasted until November of that year. He was also involved in the political shifts of 1970. During this time, Edward Gierek became the leader of the party. Jaruzelski's role in these events remains a subject of historical debate. He was responsible for the military's actions during periods of social unrest.

In the early 1980s, Poland faced a severe economic crisis. The country was heavily indebted to foreign creditors. Shortages of basic goods forced the government to use rationing. This caused great anger among the Polish people. A trade union called Solidarity began to gain massive support. The Soviet Union viewed Solidarity as a threat to the Warsaw Pact.

Jaruzelski requested a joint Soviet-Polish operation to handle the unrest. The Soviets denied this request because they were involved in the Soviet-Afghan War. Consequently, Jaruzelski imposed martial law on 13 December 1981. This military rule lasted until 22 July 1983. During this time, the government suppressed the opposition and imprisoned many activists.

By 1988, the political situation in Poland was changing rapidly. The Communist party was losing its legitimacy and support. This was highlighted by major strikes in 1988 and the resurgence of Solidarity. Jaruzelski began negotiations with the leaders of the banned union. This led to the Polish Round Table Talks in early 1989. These talks aimed to transform the political system into a multi-party one. On 4 June 1989, Poland held its first semi-free elections in the Communist bloc. Solidarity won an unexpectedly overwhelming victory in these elections. This victory helped trigger the Fall of Communism across Central and Eastern Europe.

Following the elections, the transition to democracy accelerated. In August 1989, Poland freed its prices from state control. This made Poland only the second Communist country to do so. The Communist party eventually dissolved itself in January 1990. Jaruzelski briefly served as the President of the Polish People's Republic. However, this was a ceremonial post with no real power. In 1990, Lech Wałęsa, the leader of Solidarity, was elected as the first popularly voted President. Jaruzelski retired from public life after this transition. He remains a controversial figure in Poland today. Some people praise him for ensuring a peaceful transition to democracy. Others criticize him for the violence and human rights violations during martial law.
