He was born in 1923 in a place called Kurów. During World War II, the Soviet army took his family to Siberia. He had to do hard work in the forest. The bright snow caused a problem with his eyes. This is called photokeratitis. Because of this, he wore dark sunglasses for his whole life. He later joined the First Polish Army to fight in the war.

Jaruzelski rose quickly through the military ranks. He fought in the Battle of Berlin in 1945. After the war, he studied at many military schools. He joined the Communist party in 1948. By 1968, he was the Polish Minister of Defence. He was a very powerful man in the government. He helped lead the military during many important moments. He even ordered troops to move into Czechoslovakia in 1968.

The economy was not doing well. People had to use rationing for basic goods. A group called Solidarity grew very strong. This group wanted more freedom for the people. On 13 December 1981, Jaruzelski imposed martial law. This meant the military took control of the country. This strict rule lasted until 22 July 1983.

Eventually, things began to change in Poland. Jaruzelski held the Round Table Talks in early 1989. These talks helped the country move toward a new system. In the June 1989 elections, Solidarity won a huge victory. This helped end Communist rule in many parts of Europe. Jaruzelski saw the country move toward democracy. Some people thank him for this peaceful change. Other people criticize him for his earlier hard choices.
