He was born in Tarnów in 1911. At that time, his home was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father was a soldier and an activist. His mother owned several sawmills. Józef went to the Jagiellonian University to study. Later, he became a secretary for a political group in Kraków.

During World War II, the world faced a very dark time. Józef joined a resistance group to help Poland.

In the spring of 1941, the Gestapo captured him. He was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He arrived there on 4 September 1942. His prisoner number was 62,933. Later, he was moved to a camp called Mauthausen. Finally, the US Army arrived to liberate him.

After the war, Józef rose to a high position in government. He became the premier of the Polish People's Republic. He held this job from 1947 to 1952.

He then returned to be premier for 16 years. This second time lasted from 1954 to 1970. In 1970, he became the Chairman of the Council of State. This was a role similar to being a president. He stayed in this position until 1972.

His time in power included many difficult and serious events. In 1956, there was a lot of unrest in the country. Józef spoke very strongly against those who protested. In 1970, he gave an order during protests on the coast. This led to 42 people dying and over 1,000 people being wounded.

Modern historians also look closely at his past. They say he was not fair to a man named Witold Pilecki. Pilecki was a famous resistance fighter in Auschwitz.
