On September 1, 2004, a group of armed men took over School Number One. This day is known as Knowledge Day or the "First Bell." It is a time when children and parents gather for school ceremonies. Because of the holiday, many more people were at the school than usual. The attackers were members of a group called the Riyad-us Saliheen. They were sent by a leader named Shamil Basayev. They wanted Russia to let Chechnya be an independent land.

The attackers moved from a forest near the village of Psedakh. They arrived at the school in a police van and a military truck.

Some people at first thought the men were special police practicing a drill. However, the attackers began shooting and forced everyone into the building. They took more than 1,100 people as hostages. Most of these people were children, with 777 children held captive. The attackers moved the hostages into the school gym. They used explosives and wires to keep the people from leaving.

For three days, the situation inside the school was very hard. The attackers did not let the hostages eat or drink. They called this a "hunger strike."

The attackers also made threats to keep the police away. They said they would hurt many hostages if the government attacked. On the first two days, some people tried to talk to the attackers. A doctor named Leonid Roshal tried to help negotiate. He hoped to help release some of the children. However, the negotiations did not lead to a peaceful end.

On the third day, the event became very violent. Russian security forces, including special units like Alpha and Vympel, moved in.
