The First Chechen War was a major conflict between 1994 and 1996. It involved the Russian Federation and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. This group wanted to be an independent nation. The trouble began when the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991. A leader named Dzhokhar Dudayev became the president of Chechnya. He declared that his land was independent. Most other regions in Russia signed a treaty to stay connected. However, Chechnya did not sign this agreement. This created a big disagreement between the two sides. Tensions grew higher during these years.

In 1994, the Russian military began a large operation. President Boris Yeltsin said the goal was to restore order. Russian forces used planes to bomb many areas. The capital city, Grozny, became a main place of fighting. Much of the city was turned into rubble. The fighting was very intense and lasted for a long time.

The war caused a huge amount of suffering for people. Many Chechen civilians were killed during the battles. Some estimates say between 30,000 and 100,000 civilians died. Over 500,000 people had to leave their homes to find safety. Many cities and towns were destroyed by the fighting. More than 200,000 people were injured during this period.

Events changed again in 1996. Chechen fighters managed to take back the city of Grozny. This led to a peace treaty in 1997. The Russian military agreed to withdraw from the territory. However, this peace did not last for many years. Russia invaded the region again in 1999. This started the Second Chechen War.
