The Circassian genocide was a very sad period in history. It happened during the 19th century in a place called Circassia.

This area is in the Caucasus mountains. During this time, the Russian Empire wanted to grow its lands. They wanted to control the Caucasus to expand their empire. This led to a long war between Russia and the Circassian people. The conflict changed the lives of millions of people forever.

To win the war, the Russian army used many hard methods. They burned down many Circassian villages.

Soldiers also used starvation to hurt the people living there. Many families were forced to leave their homes and move toward the Black Sea. This was a very difficult journey through the mountains. Many people died from hunger or sickness while they were moving. Some people even died when their ships sank during big storms at sea.

The fighting began many years before the final end. In 1763, Russian forces took the town of Mezdeug.

A leader named Misost Bematiqwa started to fight back in 1764. For a long time, different Russian generals led the army. Some generals, like Grigory Zass, were very harsh to the Circassian people. The Russian Empire eventually took control of the whole region. This happened after many years of fighting and resistance.

The numbers from this time are very large and serious. Before the war, more than 4 million Circassians lived in their homeland.

After the war, it is estimated that between 1 million and 1.5 million people died. Some sources say that 95 percent to 97 percent of the people were killed or forced to leave. By the year 1897, a census showed only about 150,000 Circassians remained in the area. Most people who survived moved to the Ottoman Empire. Many of them found new homes in places like Turkey and Jordan.

Today, people still remember this history in many ways.

Some countries, like Georgia and Ukraine, officially recognize this as a genocide. In the United States, the city of Wayne, New Jersey, also recognizes it. Every year on May 21, people observe the Circassian Day of Mourning. They hold ceremonies and marches to honor those who were lost. This helps keep the story of the Circassian people alive for everyone to know.
