The Tajikistani Civil War was a period of intense fighting in Tajikistan. It began in May 1992 and lasted for five years. This conflict was caused by many different things. These included economic hardship and the religious way of life for many Tajiki people. Tensions grew after a presidential election in 1991. Different groups began to argue about how the country should be run.

This struggle eventually turned into a fight between different regions and clans.

The war involved two main sides with different goals. One side was the government led by President Rahmon Nabiyev. This government was mostly made of people from the Khujand and Kulob regions. The other side was the opposition. This group included democratic reformers and religious leaders. They later formed a group called the United Tajik Opposition, or UTO.

The government received help from Russian military forces and border guards.

Fighting moved through many parts of the country. Much of the conflict happened in the south. The government's supporters were often from the Kulob and Leninabadi regions. The opposition groups came mostly from the Garm and Gorno-Badakhshan regions. These groups included the Pamiri people. During the war, the fighting was very intense. It caused great damage to the buildings and services in the country.

Some groups even fought for control of the capital city, Dushanbe.

The war was very hard on the people of Tajikistan. An estimated 20,000 to 150,000 people were killed. About 10 to 20 percent of the population had to leave their homes. Many people became refugees inside or outside the country. In total, around 1.2 million people were displaced. Many people had to rely on food and help from international groups to survive. Even journalists were in danger during this difficult time.

Peace finally came through a big meeting in 1997. Leaders met in Moscow, Russia, to sign a peace agreement. President Emomali Rahmon and UTO leader Sayid Abdulloh Nuri signed the deal. They also worked with a representative from the United Nations. This agreement helped end the fighting and created a new government. Today, people in places like Khujand celebrate a day of national unity.
