The Mozambican Civil War was a long and difficult conflict in Mozambique. It lasted from 1977 until 1992. This war changed the lives of many people in the country. It was not just a local fight between neighbors. Instead, it was tied to big global politics from the Cold War. Different groups fought for control over how the new nation should work. This struggle left deep marks on the land and its people.

The war was fought between two main groups. One group was FRELIMO, which was the ruling party in Mozambique. They wanted to build a socialist one-party state. The other main group was RENAMO. RENAMO fought against FRELIMO's plans for the country. Other smaller groups like UNAMO and COREMO also took part. The fighting was very intense across the country. It moved through many different towns and rural areas.

This war started after Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975. Before that, FRELIMO had led an armed struggle against Portuguese rule. After independence, FRELIMO became the government under President Samora Machel. However, neighbors like Rhodesia and South Africa did not agree with FRELIMO. They supported RENAMO to try to weaken the new government. This outside help made the local fighting much harder. The war grew because of these different political goals.

The fighting caused a huge amount of harm to the nation. Over one million people died from the war or from hunger. About five million people had to leave their homes. Many important things like schools, roads, and hospitals were destroyed. Both sides were accused of doing very bad things during the war. They used child soldiers to fight in the battles. They also used land mines that stayed in the countryside.

Peace finally came after many years of struggle. Direct talks began around 1990 with help from Italy and the Church. These talks led to the Rome General Peace Accords in 1992. This agreement officially ended the main fighting. RENAMO units were then folded into the national army. A group called ONUMOZ was formed to help rebuild the country. Even though there was a smaller conflict later, the 1992 peace was a huge step.
