The Mozambican Civil War was a major conflict that lasted from 1977 to 1992. It was a struggle for control over the direction of the newly independent nation. The war was driven by local political disagreements and global Cold War tensions. While it began as a domestic fight, outside powers became deeply involved. This involvement turned a local struggle into a much larger and more destructive war. The conflict shaped the modern history of Mozambique and the entire Southern African region.

The war involved several different factions with competing political goals. The ruling party was the Mozambique Liberation Front, known as FRELIMO. FRELIMO wanted to establish a socialist one-party state after gaining independence. They opposed the ideas of several smaller groups and splinter factions. The most significant opponent was the Mozambican National Resistance, or RENAMO. RENAMO fought against FRELIMO's attempts to create a single-party system. Other smaller groups like UNAMO, COREMO, UNIPOMO, and FUMO also participated in the fighting.

Outside governments played a critical role by supporting different sides. RENAMO was heavily backed by the anti-communist governments of Rhodesia and South Africa. These neighbors wanted to undermine FRELIMO because the new government supported nationalist movements in their own countries. Rhodesia, in particular, felt threatened by FRELIMO's support for groups like the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA). This support from neighboring states helped RENAMO maintain its insurgency. The war became a way for regional powers to fight their own political battles through Mozambique.

The roots of the war go back to the fight for independence from Portugal. FRELIMO led an armed struggle against Portuguese colonial rule starting in 1964. They received military equipment from the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. After the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974, the colonial government collapsed. FRELIMO took control of the country, and Samora Machel became the first President in 1975. However, the transition was not peaceful for everyone. The sudden transfer of power caused great fear among traditional Cold War allies like the United States.

The human and physical cost of the war was devastating for Mozambique. More than one million people died due to fighting or starvation caused by interrupted food supplies. An additional five million people were displaced from their homes across the region. The war destroyed vital infrastructure in rural areas, including schools, hospitals, and rail lines. Both FRELIMO security forces and RENAMO insurgents were accused of serious human rights abuses. These included the use of child soldiers and the widespread placement of land mines in the countryside.

Peace was finally achieved through international mediation and changing global politics. By 1990, the Soviet Union had stopped supporting FRELIMO, and South Africa had reduced support for RENAMO. The Mozambican Church Council and the Italian government helped mediate direct peace talks. These negotiations resulted in the Rome General Peace Accords in 1992. This agreement formally ended the hostilities between the main groups. As part of the peace process, RENAMO units were demobilized or integrated into the national armed forces.

After the main war ended, a new organization helped the country recover. The United Nations Operation in Mozambique, known as ONUMOZ, was formed to aid in postwar reconstruction. While the 1992 accords brought peace, tensions between RENAMO and FRELIMO flared up again later. A smaller second conflict occurred between 2013 and 2018. This later insurgency ended with a new peace treaty in 2019. The history of the civil war remains a central part of Mozambique's journey toward stability.
