The Mozambique Channel separates the mainland from Madagascar and the Comoros. The nation is a presidential republic. Its capital and largest city is Maputo.

The history of the region involves many waves of migration and trade. Bantu-speaking peoples migrated into the area as early as the 4th century BC. They established agricultural communities and herding societies. These groups also brought technology for smelting and smithing iron. Between the 7th and 11th centuries, Swahili port towns developed along the coast.

These towns were part of a growing Indian Ocean trade network. Merchants from Somalia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Arabia, Persia, and India visited these ports. They traded goods like gold and ivory from the African interior. Regional powers included Sofala, Angoche, and Mozambique Island.

Portuguese arrival changed the political landscape of the region. The explorer Vasco da Gama arrived in 1498. This voyage marked the beginning of Portuguese involvement in local politics and trade. The Portuguese began a process of colonization and settlement in 1505. They gained control of the Island of Mozambique and the port of Sofala in the early 16th century. The Island of Mozambique served as the colonial capital until 1898. At that time, the capital moved south to Lourenço Marques, which is now Maputo.

During the colonial era, the Portuguese used different systems to manage the land. In the central territory, they created prazos. These were land grants that tied emigrants to specific settlements. These grants were often held by prazeiros, who administered the land. Over time, many of these became African-Portuguese or African-Indian through intermarriage. In the early 20th century, the administration shifted to large private companies. These included the Mozambique Company, the Zambezia Company, and the Niassa Company. Many of these were financed by British financiers. These companies built roads, ports, and railroads to connect the region to neighboring colonies.

Mozambique eventually fought for its independence from Portuguese rule. The struggle was fueled by movements that opposed colonial policies. Many indigenous communities felt that development plans only benefited the Portuguese population. A significant event occurred on June 16, 1960, known as the Mueda massacre. This event involved the deaths of Makonde protestors and provoked the struggle for independence. Mozambique finally gained independence in 1975. After independence, the country experienced an intense civil war from 1977 to 1992. In 1994, the nation held its first multiparty elections.
