Soon, a civil war began. This war lasted from 1977 to 1992. It was fought between FRELIMO and a group called RENAMO. RENAMO was supported by the governments of Rhodesia and South Africa. These neighbors wanted to weaken FRELIMO.

The fighting was very hard on the people. Many roads, schools, and hospitals were destroyed. Over one million people died from the war or from hunger. Five million more people had to leave their homes. Both sides were accused of doing bad things. They used child soldiers and land mines.

Peace talks began in 1990. Leaders from the church and Italy helped. The fighting ended in 1992 with a peace deal in Rome. Later, there was a smaller fight between 2013 and 2018. That fight ended with a peace treaty in 2019.
