The Angolan Civil War was a long and violent conflict in the African nation of Angola. It began in 1975 and lasted until 2002. This war was a power struggle following the end of Portuguese colonial rule. While the fighting was internal, it was also a major proxy conflict of the Cold War. This means that global superpowers used the war to fight for their own interests. The Soviet Union and the United States supported different sides to spread their political ideas.

The roots of the conflict lay in the diverse ethnic groups of Angola. Before the war, the territory was part of the Portuguese Empire for over four centuries. Many different groups lived there, such as the Mbundu, the Ovimbundu, and the Bakongo. These groups had their own histories, including the ancient Kongo Empire. When Portugal left in 1975, the country lacked a unified leadership. The departure of nearly 500,000 Portuguese citizens also caused the national economy to sink into depression.

Three main rebel movements fought for control of the new nation. The People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola, or MPLA, was an urban-based group. It was primarily composed of the Mbundu people and lived in cities like Luanda. The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, known as UNITA, was a rural movement. It was founded in 1966 by Jonas Savimbi and represented the Ovimbundu people. The third group, the FNLA, focused on the interests of the Bakongo people.

The fighting involved complex alliances with many foreign nations. The MPLA received heavy support from the Soviet Union and Cuba. Cuba sent significant numbers of combat personnel to assist the MPLA government. Yugoslavia also provided $14 million in military support to the MPLA in 1977. Conversely, the United States and South Africa provided aid to UNITA. This international involvement turned local political disagreements into a much larger global struggle.

The war can be divided into three distinct periods of intense combat. The first major phase lasted from 1975 to 1991. The second phase occurred between 1992 and 1994. The final period of heavy fighting took place from 1998 to 2002. Between these periods, there were fragile moments of peace that did not last. The conflict was also tied to other regional struggles, such as the Second Congo War and the South African Border War.

The human and physical cost of the 27-year war was enormous. Historians estimate that between 500,000 and 800,000 people died during the conflict. More than one million people were internally displaced from their homes. The war devastated the country's infrastructure, including its roads and bridges. It also severely damaged the economy, religious institutions, and public administration.

Even after the war ended in 2002, the effects remained visible. Land mines were left scattered throughout the countryside. These mines continue to cause civilian casualties many years later. The remnants of war equipment, like tanks, still sit in the landscape. The war changed Angola's social and political systems forever. It remains a significant example of how local conflicts can become part of global history.
