The Vietnam War was a major armed conflict that lasted from November 1, 1955, to April 30, 1975.

It took place primarily in Vietnam, but the fighting also spread into Laos and Cambodia. The war was complex because it functioned as three different types of conflict at once. First, it was a civil war between the communist North and the anti-communist South. Second, it was a postcolonial war of national liberation following French rule. Third, it was a proxy war of the Cold War. In a proxy war, larger superpowers fight through smaller nations to avoid direct conflict. The Soviet Union and China supported North Vietnam, while the United States and other nations supported South Vietnam.

To understand how the war began, we must look at the history of French Indochina. Since the 1880s, France had controlled the region. In 1940, Japan invaded and established a dual colonial rule with the French. During this time, Ho Chi Minh established the Viet Minh to fight for independence. After Japan surrendered in 1945, Ho Chi Minh declared the independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. However, the French soon returned to re-establish control. This led to the First Indochina War. The conflict ended in 1954 after the French were defeated at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.

The 1954 Geneva Conference divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel. The North was led by Ho Chi Minh, while the South was led by Ngo Dinh Diem. The United States provided financial and military support to the South. North Vietnam began supporting the Viet Cong, a group of southern dissidents, through guerrilla warfare. They used the Ho Chi Minh trail to move supplies through Laos. In the early 1960s, President John F. Kennedy increased U.S. involvement by sending military advisors. In 1963, a military coup led to the death of Diem, which caused instability in the South.

U.S. military involvement escalated rapidly after the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964. This event gave President Lyndon B. Johnson the authority to increase the military presence without a formal declaration of war. Johnson launched a bombing campaign against the North and deployed combat troops. By 1966, there were 184,000 U.S. troops in the region. By 1969, that number had risen to 536,000.

The two sides used very different military strategies. U.S. forces relied on air supremacy and overwhelming firepower. They conducted search and destroy operations in rural areas. Conversely, communist forces used guerrilla tactics. They used the jungle and the countryside as concealed base areas to hide and strike.

A turning point occurred in 1968 with the Tet Offensive.

Led by Le Duan, communist forces launched a massive attack. While the offensive was a tactical defeat for the communists, it convinced many Americans that the war could not be won. Following this, President Richard Nixon began a policy called "Vietnamization." This plan aimed to expand the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) so that U.S. forces could withdraw. By 1972, most U.S. troops had left, though they provided air support during the North's Easter Offensive. The 1973 Paris Peace Accords led to the departure of the last American forces.

The war reached its final stage during the 1975 Spring Offensive. The South Vietnamese government, led by the Thiệu regime, was weakened by economic troubles and corruption. Consequently, the North Vietnamese forces captured Saigon, marking the end of the war.

In 1976, North and South Vietnam were officially reunified. The human cost of the conflict was enormous. Estimates suggest between 970,000 and 3 million Vietnamese soldiers and civilians were killed. Other casualties included 275,000 to 310,000 Cambodians and 58,220 U.S. service members.

The war's impact extended far beyond the battlefield. It caused a massive refugee crisis, known as the "boat people," where millions fled Indochina. About 250,000 people died at sea during these journeys. In the United States, the war led to "Vietnam syndrome," an aversion to overseas military involvement. The use of toxic herbicides also caused long-term health problems for many. The conflict changed the political landscape of Southeast Asia for decades. It showed how local civil wars could become central parts of global political struggles.
