The Republic of Vietnam, commonly known as South Vietnam, was a nation in Southeast Asia. It existed from 1955 to 1975.

During the Cold War, South Vietnam was a member of the Western Bloc. This meant it was aligned with non-communist nations like the United States. The United States and 87 other nations recognized its sovereignty. However, a Soviet veto in 1957 prevented the country from joining the United Nations. The nation's history is deeply tied to the struggle for independence from colonial rule and the fight between different political ideologies.

The origins of the country lie in the aftermath of World War II. During the war, Indochina was controlled by Vichy France and occupied by Japan. When Japan surrendered in 1945, a power vacuum emerged. The Viet Minh, a communist-led group under Ho Chi Minh, seized power in the north. They proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) in Hanoi. Meanwhile, the 16th parallel was used to divide Vietnam into two military zones. British forces occupied the south to disarm Japanese troops. These forces helped the French return to control urban centers like Saigon.

In 1949, the State of Vietnam (SVN) was established as an alternative to the communist DRV. It was led by the former emperor Bảo Đại. This state was part of the French Union. Following the 1954 Geneva Conference, the country was officially partitioned at the 17th parallel. The SVN administered the southern and part of the central regions. This period saw a massive movement of people known as the Great Migration. Between 1954 and 1955, about one million people fled from the communist North to the South. This group included 500,000 Catholics and 200,000 Buddhists.

Ngô Đình Diệm became a central figure in South Vietnamese politics. He was an anti-communist and anti-colonialist leader. In 1954, he was appointed prime minister of the State of Vietnam. A 1955 referendum was held to decide the government's future. Although the vote was marred by electoral fraud, Diệm used the result to depose Bảo Đại. On 26 October 1955, Diệm proclaimed himself president of the new Republic of Vietnam.

His leadership ended in 1963 when he was killed in a military coup led by General Dương Văn Minh. This coup was backed by the CIA.

Following Diệm's death, the country experienced a period of political instability. Various short-lived military governments took control. Eventually, General Nguyễn Văn Thiệu emerged as a leader. He led the country from 1967 until 1975 after a disputed civilian election.

During his leadership, the conflict with communist forces intensified. The Viet Cong, a group organized by the South Vietnamese government but supported by North Vietnam, began an uprising in 1955. This conflict eventually grew into the large-scale Vietnam War.

The military scale of the war reached its peak in the late 1960s. In 1965, the United States intervened by sending regular Marine and Army units. This was intended to support the Republic's armed forces. The fighting became very intense during the Tet Offensive in February 1968. At this time, the combatants included over one million South Vietnamese soldiers. There were also 500,000 U.S. soldiers and 100,000 soldiers from allied nations. These allies included South Korea, Australia, and Thailand.

The war shifted from a guerrilla struggle to a more conventional fight.

Attempts were made to find a peaceful solution through diplomacy. In January 1973, the Paris Peace Accords were concluded after five years of negotiations. However, fighting continued despite the truce. In 1975, the North launched a large, armored invasion known as the Easter Offensive. Following the withdrawal of U.S. ground forces, communist forces launched a second major conventional invasion. On 30 April 1975, communist forces overran Saigon. This event, known as the fall of Saigon, ended the Republic of Vietnam.

The end of the Republic of Vietnam led to a new political era. On 2 July 1976, the North and the South merged. They formed the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. As part of this unification, the city of Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. This merger marked the conclusion of decades of civil conflict and international involvement in the region. The history of South Vietnam remains a significant study of the Cold War and the complexities of nation-building.
