The First Indochina War was a major conflict in Southeast Asia. It took place in French Indochina from December 19, 1946, to August 11, 1954. The war was fought between France and the Viet Minh. The Viet Minh was a communist-led group seeking national independence.

This struggle was part of a larger movement called decolonization. This is when people in colonies work to rule themselves. The war shaped the modern borders of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

The conflict involved two very different styles of fighting. Much of the war was characterized by guerrilla warfare. This is a type of combat where smaller groups use surprise attacks. They often use the natural environment, like forests, to hide.

The Viet Minh used novel tactics to stop French supplies. They used direct artillery fire and convoy ambushes. They also used anti-aircraft weaponry to strike planes. In contrast, the French fought a more conventional war. They used professional troops, the Foreign Legion, and colonial soldiers.

These colonial troops came from North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The war had several distinct political stages. First, France reorganized Indochina into a confederation of states. In 1949, they created the State of Vietnam. They installed the former Emperor Bảo Đại as the head of state.

During this time, the world began to take sides. In 1950, the Soviet Union and China recognized the Viet Minh. Meanwhile, the United States recognized the State of Vietnam. This turned a local struggle into a part of a global political division.

The roots of the war go back many decades. France had been absorbing parts of Vietnam since 1858. Vietnamese nationalism grew as people resisted French rule. An early leader was Phan Bội Châu, who looked to Japan for inspiration.

During World War II, the situation became even more difficult. Japan invaded French Indochina in 1940. This created a "double yoke" of control. The Vietnamese people were ruled by both the French and the Japanese. In 1941, Ho Chi Minh formed the Viet Minh to fight this occupation.

World War II changed everything in 1945. After Japan surrendered, a power vacuum opened. Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) in September 1945. However, French forces wanted to restore their authority. They overthrew the DRV government in Saigon in late 1945. This tension led to the start of full-scale war in December 1946.

The fighting was intense and caused massive destruction.

The war was incredibly costly in terms of human life. Estimates suggest that between 400,000 and 842,707 soldiers died. Additionally, between 125,000 and 400,000 civilians lost their lives.

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu was the most decisive moment. The French defeat there led to the end of their control.

The war ended through diplomatic negotiations. In July 1954, leaders met at the Geneva Conference.

They decided to divide Vietnam at the 17th parallel. The Viet Minh gained control of North Vietnam. The State of Vietnam controlled the south. This separation was intended to be temporary. However, it eventually led to the much larger Vietnam War. The Indochinese Federation was dissolved in December 1954. By 1956, the last French troops had left the region.
