The fighting happened between the French and a group called the Viet Minh. The Viet Minh wanted their country to be independent. This war lasted from December 1946 until August 1954. It changed the history of Southeast Asia forever.

How the fighting worked was very complex. Much of the war involved guerrilla warfare. This is a way of fighting where smaller groups use surprise attacks. They often hide in forests or use the land to their advantage.

The Viet Minh used things like ambushes and anti-aircraft weapons. They also used direct artillery fire to stop supplies. On the other side, France used professional troops and colonial soldiers. These soldiers came from many different places like North Africa and other parts of the French empire.

The history of this war began many years earlier. France had controlled much of the region since the late 1800s.

During World War II, Japan also invaded the area. This created a very hard time for the local people. In 1941, Ho Chi Minh formed the Viet Minh to fight for freedom. After Japan surrendered in 1945, Ho Chi Minh declared the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. However, France wanted to return and rule the area again. This led to the start of the full war in 1946.

Many important people and places were involved in the struggle. The Viet Minh received help from the Soviet Union and China.

A major turning point was the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. This was a decisive victory for the Viet Minh. The war was very costly for everyone involved. Between 400,000 and 842,707 soldiers died during the fighting. Also, between 125,000 and 400,000 civilians lost their lives.

The end of the war led to new changes. In 1954, leaders met at the Geneva Conference to discuss peace.

They decided to split the land at the 17th parallel. This meant North Vietnam was controlled by the Viet Minh. The south was controlled by the State of Vietnam. This split was meant to be temporary. However, it eventually led to the even larger Vietnam War. The Indochinese Federation was dissolved shortly after these decisions were made.
