The Vietnam War was a very long and serious conflict.

It took place in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The fighting lasted from 1955 until 1975. This war was part of a larger struggle called the Cold War. During this time, the Soviet Union and the United States had many disagreements. The war in Southeast Asia became a place where these two powers supported different sides. It was also a civil war because people within the region were fighting each other.

The war involved different ways of fighting. The North Vietnamese and their allies used guerrilla tactics. This means they used the thick jungle and the countryside to hide. They moved through secret paths like the Ho Chi Minh trail to move supplies. On the other side, the United States and South Vietnam used much more firepower. The U.S. military used planes to drop bombs and conducted search and destroy missions.

These two different styles of fighting made the war very difficult to end.

Before this war, Vietnam was controlled by France. After the French were defeated in an earlier war, Vietnam gained independence in 1954. However, the country was divided into two parts at the 17th parallel.

Ho Chi Minh led the North, which was communist. Ngo Dinh Diem led the South, which was supported by the United States. In the early 1960s, President John F. Kennedy sent more advisors to help the South. Later, President Lyndon B. Johnson sent many more combat troops to fight.

Many people were involved in the fighting over the years. By 1966, there were 184,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam. By 1969, that number grew to 536,000 soldiers.

In 1968, a major event called the Tet Offensive happened. It was a large attack by communist forces. While it was a tactical defeat for the North, it changed how many Americans felt about the war. Eventually, President Richard Nixon began a plan to withdraw U.S. troops while the South Vietnamese army took over more of the fighting.

The war ended in 1975 after the South fell to the North.

This meant the two halves of Vietnam were reunified into one country in 1976. The war was very costly for everyone. Estimates say between 970,000 and 3 million Vietnamese soldiers and civilians died. Many other people in Cambodia and Laos also lost their lives. Millions of people became refugees and had to leave their homes to find safety elsewhere.
