This war was part of a much larger global struggle called the Cold War. During this time, powerful countries wanted to spread their different ideas. Laos became a place where these powers fought through other groups. This is often called a proxy war. The fighting involved many different armies and leaders.

Two main groups fought for control of the country. One group was the Royal Lao Government. The other was a communist group called the Pathet Lao.

The North Vietnamese Army also worked with the Pathet Lao. They used a special supply path called the Ho Chi Minh trail. This trail ran through southeast Laos. It helped move North Vietnamese troops and supplies to South Vietnam. To stop this, the United States used planes to bomb the supply routes.

Before the big war, Laos had a different struggle for independence. After World War II ended, the country was in political chaos. The French had ruled Laos for a long time. In 1945, a group called Lao Issara was formed. They wanted Laos to be free from French control.

This group included three brothers: Phetsarath Ratanavongsa, Souvanna Phouma, and Souphanouvong. However, the French returned to take control again in 1946. This led to more tension and fighting in the years that followed.

Many people played important roles during the conflict. The United States helped train local hill tribesmen to fight. These soldiers were mostly from the Hmong and Mien groups.

The war had two main areas of fighting. One was in the northern Plain of Jars. The other was in the southeastern panhandle. The fighting often changed based on the weather and the seasons.

In December 1975, the Pathet Lao and North Vietnam won the war. This happened shortly after North Vietnam won its own war in South Vietnam.

Even after the war ended, many unexploded bombs remained on the ground. These are called unexploded ordnance, or UXO. In 2017, the government said these explosives caused many injuries and deaths.
