This fighting changed the lives of many people in Cambodia forever.

At first, Prince Norodom Sihanouk ruled the nation. He tried to keep a balance between different political ideas. He wanted to stay neutral during the wars in nearby lands. However, his plan became very hard to maintain. In 1965, he stopped taking aid from the United States. Instead, he turned to China and the Soviet Union for help.

Things changed quickly in March 1970.

The North Vietnamese refused to go. Instead, they helped the Khmer Rouge take over much of the northeast. The United States began helping the Cambodian government with money and air strikes.
