These attacks targeted the South Vietnamese Army and United States forces. The North Vietnamese People's Army of Vietnam and the Viet Cong led the mission. They aimed for military and civilian command centers throughout South Vietnam. This event was one of the largest operations of the entire war. It changed how many people viewed the conflict forever.

The offensive worked through many simultaneous strikes. The name comes from the Vietnamese Lunar New Year holiday, called Tết Nguyên Đán. During this time, many South Vietnamese soldiers were on leave. This gave the North a chance to strike. On January 31, the operation became countrywide. About 77,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops attacked over 100 towns and cities. They hit 36 of the 44 provincial capitals. They also attacked the capital city, Saigon.

Historians debate why the North launched this attack. Some believe the political results were an intended goal. Others argue the goal was to topple the Saigon government immediately. Many captured documents suggest they wanted to destroy the government. They hoped to install a new coalition government instead. The North leaders, like Lê Duẩn, wanted to trigger a large uprising. They believed mass assaults on cities would cause people to join them.

The fighting was very intense in several locations. In the city of Huế, the battle lasted for one month. This fighting caused the city to be destroyed. During the occupation of Huế, thousands of people were killed in a massacre. Fighting also continued for two months around the Khe Sanh combat base.

While the North suffered a military defeat, the impact was huge. The uprising the North expected never actually happened. No large groups of South Vietnamese units joined the enemy.

The offensive had deep effects on the American public. Before the attacks, leaders said the North was losing. The sudden scale of the offensive shocked many Americans. This caused public support for the war to decline quickly. Because of this, the Johnson administration began seeking peace talks.
