Saigon was the capital city of South Vietnam. In 1975, North Vietnamese forces began a massive final attack. This attack was led by General Văn Tiến Dũng. His forces included the People's Army of Vietnam and the Viet Cong. They moved quickly to take control of the country. This event changed how the people of Vietnam lived together.

The battle moved through many different places in the spring of 1975. First, North Vietnamese troops took the city of Buôn Ma Thuột on March 10. Later, they captured the city of Huế on March 25. They also took Đà Nẵng on March 28. Many people fled these cities during the fighting. South Vietnamese soldiers tried to make a last stand at Xuân Lộc. They fought hard for 11 days before they had to withdraw. This allowed the North Vietnamese forces to surround the capital city.

As the fighting got closer, many people had to leave Saigon very fast. This was done through a plan called Operation Frequent Wind.

It became the largest helicopter evacuation in history. Almost all American military and civilian personnel left the city this way. Tens of thousands of South Vietnamese people also left to find safety. Some people even used large ships to reach the sea.

A few Americans chose to stay behind in the city.

On April 30, 1975, the North Vietnamese forces officially took the city.

President Minh surrendered to the new leaders. The North Vietnamese raised their flag over the Presidential Palace. This moment ended the existence of South Vietnam. The country began a transition period under a new government. By July 2, 1976, the two parts of Vietnam became one nation. This new country was called the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The capital city was moved to Hanoi.

People call this historical event by many different names. In Western countries, it is often called the fall of Saigon.

The Vietnamese government calls it Liberation Day or Victory Day. Some refugees call it a time of great shame. To mark the new start, the city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. This was named after the North Vietnamese President who died in 1969. This change helped show that the country was finally unified. The event remains a very important part of history today.
