The Vietnamese boat people were refugees who fled Vietnam by sea. This happened after the Vietnam War ended in 1975. Many people left their homes to find safety in other lands. This movement became a huge humanitarian crisis. It reached its highest point in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The crisis continued for many years into the 1990s.

Many different things caused people to leave their country. Life was very hard due to economic problems. The government sent up to 300,000 people to re-education camps. In these camps, people faced starvation and hard labor. One million people also had to move to New Economic Zones to farm. Tensions between Vietnam and China also made things difficult. Many ethnic Chinese people, known as the Hoa, decided to flee.

Leaving Vietnam was a very dangerous way to travel. Many people used small and flimsy boats. These boats were not meant for the open ocean. Travelers had to face big storms and hunger. They also had to watch out for pirates. The United Nations says between 200,000 and 250,000 people died at sea. Many others arrived safely in other countries by 1995.

Refugees first arrived in places like Hong Kong and Indonesia. They also went to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. In 1979, many large ships arrived in Hong Kong. One ship named the Huey Fong carried 3,318 people. Another ship called the Skyluck carried 2,651 people. Southeast Asian countries eventually asked for help with the arrivals. An international conference was held in Geneva in 1979 to help.

After the conference, new programs helped people move safely. The UNHCR helped with the Orderly Departure Program. This let people leave Vietnam without using dangerous boats. Most refugees were eventually resettled in developed countries. Many found new homes in the United States and Canada. Others moved to Australia, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Tens of thousands of people even returned to Vietnam.
