After the Vietnam War ended in 1975, many people left Vietnam. These people are called boat people. They fled by sea to find safety.

Many things made people want to leave. Life was hard due to money problems. Some people were sent to re-education camps. In these camps, people had to do hard work. Others were sent to live in new zones to farm land. Many ethnic Chinese people, called Hoa, also left Vietnam.

The journey by sea was very dangerous. Many people used small, weak boats. They had to face big storms and hunger. Pirates were also a threat. Many people did not survive the trip. Some say up to 250,000 people died at sea.

Other countries helped the refugees. Many people went to refugee camps in places like Hong Kong. Later, they moved to new homes. Most went to the United States, Canada, or Australia.

Groups like the UNHCR helped find new homes. This helped many people start new lives safely.
