One group in Cambodia was called the Khmer Rouge. They were very mean to their own people. They also attacked villages in Vietnam. To stop them, Vietnam sent its army into Cambodia. This helped end the bad rule of the Khmer Rouge. Vietnam stayed in Cambodia for over ten years.

Other countries joined the fights too. China and the Soviet Union did not agree on many things. China did not want Vietnam to be close to the Soviet Union. Because of this, China attacked northern Vietnam in 1979. Vietnam and China had many small fights for many years.

Vietnam also had fights near the border of Thailand. This was because the Khmer Rouge hid in Thailand. Finally, leaders met to make peace. They signed the Paris Peace Accords in 1991. This helped the region become calm again.
