The Third Indochina War was a series of fights in Southeast Asia. These conflicts happened after 1975. That was the year communist groups won in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Even though these groups were all communist, they did not get along. They fought to see who would have the most influence in the region.

Many of these fights started because of the Khmer Rouge. This was a group that ruled Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge was very violent toward its own people. They also sent soldiers into Vietnam to attack villages. In one attack at Ba Chúc, they killed 3,157 Vietnamese civilians. To stop these raids, Vietnam sent its army into Cambodia in late 1978. They reached the capital city, Phnom Penh, in January 1979. This helped end the rule of the Khmer Rouge.

Other large countries also got involved in the fighting. China and the Soviet Union were both communist powers. However, they had a big disagreement called the Sino-Soviet split. China did not want Vietnam to be close to the Soviet Union. Because Vietnam chose to be pro-Soviet, China became angry. In February 1979, China launched a military operation against northern Vietnam. They wanted to stop Soviet influence in the area.

The fighting lasted for a very long time. Vietnam stayed in Cambodia for over ten years to keep the Khmer Rouge away. The Khmer Rouge leaders fled to the border of Thailand. This caused more trouble for Vietnam and Thailand. Vietnamese troops and Thai troops even had direct fights near the border. Many people were hurt in these clashes. Vietnam also felt alone because most other countries did not support their actions in Cambodia.

Peace finally began to come to the region through meetings. In 1989, the Vietnamese army started to leave Cambodian land. Later, leaders signed the Paris Peace Accords in 1991. This agreement helped stop the regular fighting between armies. By 1993, Cambodia became a constitutional monarchy again. This means they had a new way to run their government. While some small fights continued in Laos, the large wars in Indochina had ended.
