The Cambodian–Vietnamese War was a long conflict that lasted from 1978 to 1989.

It involved the Khmer Rouge and Vietnam, along with their different allies. This war was part of a larger global struggle called the Cold War. It was also part of the Third Indochina War. During this time, the Soviet Union supported Vietnam in the fight. Meanwhile, China chose to support the Khmer Rouge instead. Even though both sides were communist, they could not get along. This happened because their alliance broke down after they both won wars in their own lands.

The fighting grew because of deep fears and past disagreements. The Khmer Rouge was led by a man named Pol Pot. His group feared that Vietnam wanted to control all of Cambodia. They also wanted to take back land in the Mekong Delta region. Because of these fears, the Khmer Rouge attacked Vietnam many times. In April 1978, they committed a terrible act called the Ba Chúc massacre. During this event, over 3,000 Vietnamese civilians were killed.

These attacks led Vietnam to decide they had to act. They wanted to remove the Khmer Rouge from power for good.

Vietnam began its large military move in December 1978.

First, they launched a limited attack toward the town of Kratie. On December 25, 1978, Vietnam started a full-scale invasion. They supported Cambodian people who wanted to leave the Khmer Rouge. The Vietnamese army moved very quickly through the country. They captured the capital city, Phnom Penh, in only two weeks. This action ended the rule of the Khmer Rouge government. It also stopped the Cambodian genocide, which had killed millions of people.

After the capital fell, a new government was set up in Cambodia. This new group was called the People's Republic of Kampuchea. However, the Khmer Rouge did not give up their fight. They retreated into the jungles near the border of Thailand. They joined other groups like FUNCINPEC, led by Norodom Sihanouk. In 1982, these groups formed a coalition government to fight back.

Peace finally came through many years of hard work and talks. Vietnam completely left Cambodia in September 1989. In 1991, leaders signed the Paris Peace Agreements to help the country. This led to a special time of transition led by the United Nations. In May 1993, Cambodia held its general elections. The group called FUNCINPEC won the election, but they formed a coalition to keep peace. This restored the constitutional monarchy in the Kingdom of Cambodia.
