This war was part of a larger time of change in Southeast Asia. Some historians call it the Third Indochina War. The two countries had many disagreements about how to lead their regions. These disagreements grew over many years. The war lasted for about one month.

It was a very short but important fight between these neighbors.

Many things led to the fighting in 1979. In 1978, Vietnam moved into the country of Cambodia. They did this to end the rule of a group called the Khmer Rouge.

China said it would respond to this move. China wanted to stop Vietnam from being too strong in the area. China also wanted to show that it was not under the influence of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was a very large country and a friend to Vietnam. This tension between China and the Soviet Union made things even harder.

The fighting began with a surprise move by China. In February 1979, Chinese forces crossed into northern Vietnam.

They moved quickly to capture several cities near the border. China called this a "punitive mission." This means they intended to punish Vietnam for its actions. The fighting was intense in the northern parts of the country. By March 6, 1979, China declared that its mission was finished. After that, the Chinese troops began to withdraw from Vietnamese land.

There were many different names for this war. The Chinese government called it a "self-defense counterattack."

The government in Vietnam called it a "war against Chinese expansionism." Some people also called it the "Northern Border Defense War." Even though the fighting ended quickly, the results lasted a long time. Vietnam stayed in Cambodia until 1989. Because of this, China did not reach all its goals. The war showed that the Soviet Union could not protect its ally, Vietnam.

This war changed how China and Vietnam talked to each other. Their relationship stayed very poor for many years. They did not fully fix their diplomatic ties until 1991. This happened after the Soviet Union stopped existing and Vietnam left Cambodia. Later, the two countries worked together to settle their land borders. In 1999, they finally agreed on the formal Sino-Vietnamese land border. This helped bring more peace to the region after many years of struggle.
