For many years, the nation was split into two separate parts. This split began after World War II ended in 1945. At that time, there was no central German government.

Instead, four Allied countries occupied different zones. These countries were the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union. This division shaped how people lived for decades.

The division worked by creating two different types of nations. In 1949, the American, British, and French zones joined together. They formed the Federal Republic of Germany, also known as West Germany.

This was a liberal democracy. In October 1949, the Soviet-occupied zone became the German Democratic Republic, or East Germany.

East Germany was a communist state. The two sides had different rules and ways of life. Most of the borders were tightly controlled and fortified.

Change began to happen in 1989 through a movement called the Peaceful Revolution. This movement started when East German citizens held many protests.

A big change happened on May 2, 1989. Hungary removed its border fence with Austria. This opened a hole in the Iron Curtain. Thousands of East Germans used this path to flee to West Germany.

Leaders then worked hard to bring the two sides together. They held negotiations to create a Unification Treaty.

On this day, East and West Berlin also became a single city. This city eventually became the capital of the whole country. The new Germany is an enlarged version of the West German state.

This history helps us understand modern Europe. The reunification changed how many countries work together. For example, the new Germany kept its seats in NATO and the United Nations.

It also stayed in the European Union. However, it had to leave the Warsaw Pact. This was because only East Germany had been a member of that group. Today, Germany is a single, strong country in the heart of Europe.
