West Germany was a country that existed for a short time. It was officially called the Federal Republic of Germany. It began on 23 May 1949. It lasted until 3 October 1990. People often called it the Bonn Republic. This name came from its capital city, Bonn.

During the Cold War, it was part of the Western Bloc. This meant it worked with other Western nations. It was a very important part of Europe during that era.

Germany was divided into different zones after World War II. The United States, the United Kingdom, and France held three zones. These three zones eventually merged to form West Germany. The country was made of twelve different states.

Three states merged in 1952 to form Baden-Württemberg. Later, the Saarland joined as a state in 1957. West Berlin was also a special place. It was not officially a state. However, it worked closely with West Germany.

He wanted West Germany to join NATO. He also helped start ideas for the European Union. Under his leadership, the country saw an economic miracle. This happened during the 1950s. West Germany grew very quickly after the war. It became the second-largest economy in the whole world.

History shows that the division of Germany changed many times. In 1974, East Germany changed how it spoke about the West. They began to call West Germans foreigners. They also used the short name BRD.

But in 1990, things changed again. The Berlin Wall opened up. This led to the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. West Germany and East Germany signed a special treaty. This was called the Two-plus-Four Agreement.

This treaty helped the two sides join back together.

Reunification happened on 3 October 1990. East Germany voted to join the Federal Republic. This was a voluntary act. The number of states grew from ten to 16. The reunited country kept the old name. It is still the Federal Republic of Germany today. It kept its memberships in groups like the United Nations and NATO.
