West Germany was the common name for the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). It existed from 23 May 1949 until 3 October 1990. This nation was formed during the Allied occupation after World War II. It was a key part of the Western Bloc during the Cold War. People sometimes called it the Bonn Republic because Bonn was its capital. Others called it the Second German Republic.

The creation of West Germany followed the division of the country into occupation zones. After the war, the Allies divided Germany into four zones. These were the French, British, American, and Soviet zones. Berlin was also divided into four zones. The United States, United Kingdom, and France eventually merged their zones. This merger created the political entity of West Germany.

This process replaced old regional structures with twelve new federal states. Three states merged in 1952 to form Baden-Württemberg. In 1957, the Saarland joined as a state. West Berlin was an unofficial eleventh state that aligned with West Germany.

West German politics were shaped by its first Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer. He served from 1949 until 1963. Adenauer chose to align West Germany with NATO. He did not want the country to be neutral. He also supported agreements that led to the European Union. His leadership helped the nation rebuild after the destruction of the war.

During the 1950s, West Germany experienced an economic miracle. The country rose from massive wartime destruction to become a global power. It became the world's second-largest economy during this period. This rapid growth changed the country's influence in the world. Industrial production and stability helped lay the foundation for modern Germany.

Naming conventions became a source of tension between the two Germanies. West Germany was the Federal Republic of Germany. East Germany was the German Democratic Republic (GDR). In the 1970s, East Germany changed its official stance. It abandoned the idea of a single German nation in 1974. This meant East Germany officially viewed West Germans as foreigners. They often used the abbreviation BRD to refer to the West.

The end of the division began with the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. The opening of the Berlin Wall was a major symbol of this change. West Germany and East Germany worked together to achieve reunification. They signed the Treaty on the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany. This is also called the Two-plus-Four Agreement.

This treaty allowed the Four Allied powers to relinquish their authority. It also confirmed the final external boundaries of the country.

Reunification was completed on 3 October 1990. This was a voluntary act where East Germany joined the Federal Republic. The process added six new states to the existing ten. This brought the total number of states to 16. The reunited nation was not a new state. Instead, the Federal Republic of Germany was simply enlarged. It kept its existing memberships in NATO and the United Nations.
