States of Germany

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Germany is a large country made of sixteen different states. These states are called "Länder," which means "lands." Most of these states are called area-states. In an area-state, there is a state government and also local offices called counties. These local offices help run things in smaller areas. Two states are different because they are city-states. Berlin and Hamburg are city-states where the city and state leaders are the same. Bremen is a special mix of both types. It includes the city of Bremen and the city of Bremerhaven.

Each state has its own way of managing its people. Most states have a group called a Landtag to help make rules. Some states have special names for themselves. Bavaria, Saxony, and Thuringia call themselves "free states." This is a stylistic name and does not mean they have extra legal power. In the state of Baden-Württemberg, the leader is named Winfried Kretschmann. In Bavaria, the leader is Markus Söder. These leaders help guide their specific parts of the country.

Germany's borders have changed many times throughout history. Long ago, the Holy Roman Empire had over 300 small political groups. After many wars, these groups became fewer. In 1871, the German Empire was formed under the leadership of Prussia. Prussia was very large and held most of the land and people. Later, the Weimar Republic was formed with 17 states. During the Nazi period, many of these states lost their power.

Modern Germany began to take its current shape after World War II. In 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany was created. This happened by joining three zones run by the Americans, British, and French. In 1952, three smaller states merged to form Baden-Württemberg. In 1957, the state of Saarland joined the federation. A huge change happened in 1990 during German reunification. This brought the eastern states into the group.

Reunification added states like Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. It also made Berlin a full state again. Before this, the country was divided into West and East Germany. Now, all these states work together as one federation. Some people still talk about changing state borders today. However, the sixteen states remain the main parts of the nation. They help keep the country organized and running well.
