Many countries in the Eastern Bloc had governments that used a system called Marxism-Leninism. These movements helped those governments collapse. This era is sometimes called the "Autumn of Nations." It changed the balance of power in the whole world. The revolutions helped end the Cold War between superpowers.

Change happened through many different ways. Many people used civil resistance to show they wanted new rules. This means they used protests and strikes to demand change. In most places, these changes were peaceful.

In 1988, more strikes happened in Poland. By June 1989, Poland held elections. Solidarity won a huge victory in those elections. This led to a peaceful end to communist rule in Poland.

Other countries soon followed the lead of Poland.

Hungary held talks to change its government. In August 1989, people in the Baltic states joined together. Over a quarter of the population formed the Baltic Way. They used a human chain to protest the Soviet Union.
