The Romanian revolution was a period of intense unrest in 1989. It happened in the Socialist Republic of Romania. This country was part of the Eastern Bloc. During this time, many other countries were also changing. The revolution changed how Romania was ruled. It ended 42 years of Communist rule.

This was a very different event than other revolutions. It was the only one in the Warsaw Pact that used violence to remove leaders. It also resulted in the execution of the leaders.

Life in Romania was very difficult during the 1980s. Nicolae Ceaușescu was the leader of the Communist Party. He wanted to pay back a huge national debt. This debt was about $10 billion. To pay it, the government used austerity measures. This meant people had very little food or heat. Many people suffered from hunger and malnutrition.

The government also built huge buildings like the Palace of the Parliament. These projects used a lot of money. They even tore down homes to make room for them.

Control was kept through a secret police force called the Securitate. This group was one of the largest in the Eastern Bloc. They watched people to stop them from disagreeing with the government. Because of this, free speech was very limited. In mid-December 1989, protests started in the city of Timișoara. This began because the government tried to evict a pastor named László Tőkés. Soon, the protests spread to other cities.

People wanted a new government and more freedom.

Things changed quickly in the capital city of Bucharest. Ceaușescu gave a speech on television that went poorly. After that, many soldiers switched to help the protesters. On December 22, 1989, Ceaușescu and his wife, Elena, fled by helicopter. They were later caught in Târgoviște. A military court tried them for many crimes. These included abuse of power and damaging the economy.

They were executed on Christmas Day, 1989. Over one thousand people died during this violent time.

After the leaders were gone, a group called the National Salvation Front took power. They promised to hold free elections within five months. They won a huge victory in May 1990. This new group started making democratic reforms. Romania began to change its relationship with the West.
