The Romanian revolution was a period of violent civil unrest in December 1989. It took place within the Socialist Republic of Romania. This country was part of the Eastern Bloc. During this time, many nations in the Warsaw Pact were undergoing major changes. The Romanian revolution was unique among these events. It was the only revolution in the Warsaw Pact that violently overthrew the leadership. It was also the only one that ended with the execution of its leaders.

For decades, Romania was under the control of the Communist Party. Official Communist rule began in 1947 following World War II. Nicolae Ceaușescu became the leader of the country in 1965. He and his wife, Elena, led a very repressive regime. To maintain control, the government used a secret police force called the Securitate. This organization was one of the largest in the Eastern Bloc. The Securitate acted as a main suppressor of popular dissent. They used violence to quash political disagreement and kept the population under constant watch.

Life in Romania became increasingly difficult during the 1980s due to economic policies. Ceaușescu began an austerity programme in 1981. This programme was designed to pay off a national debt of $10 billion. To raise money, the government rationed basic goods like food, gas, and heating. These measures caused widespread shortages and increased malnutrition. The infant mortality rate grew to be the highest in Europe. At the same time, the government spent massive amounts of money on megalomaniac projects. They built the House of the Republic, which is now the Palace of the Parliament. This is the largest palace in the world. Thousands of residents in Bucharest were evicted from their homes to make room for these structures.

In mid-December 1989, the unrest began in the city of Timișoara. The protests started because the government attempted to evict a Hungarian Reformed Church pastor named László Tőkés. This event sparked demonstrations by the Hungarian minority. Soon, the movement spread throughout the country as Romanians sought to depose Ceaușescu.

While other Eastern European leaders were resigning, Ceaușescu remained firm. In late November 1989, he was even re-elected for another five-year term. However, the momentum of the revolution was becoming unstoppable.

The situation reached a breaking point in the capital city, Bucharest. Ceaușescu gave a public speech that was broadcast to millions on state television. The speech was a failure and failed to calm the people. Shortly after, rank-and-file members of the military switched sides. They stopped supporting the dictator and began backing the protesters. On December 22, 1989, Ceaușescu and Elena fled the capital by helicopter. This escape made them appear like fugitives guilty of crimes.

After their escape, the couple was captured in Târgoviște. They faced a drumhead military tribunal, which is a quick trial held in the field. They were charged with genocide, damaging the national economy, and abusing power against the Romanian people. The tribunal convicted them on all charges. Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu were executed on Christmas Day, 1989. This event marked the end of 42 years of Communist rule. The revolution was highly fatal, with estimates suggesting over one thousand people died. Thousands more were injured during the street violence and riots.

Following the deaths of the leaders, the National Salvation Front (FSN) took power. They promised to hold free and fair elections within five months. In May 1990, the FSN won a landslide victory in the elections. The new government began implementing economic and democratic reforms. These changes helped Romania become more integrated with the West. In 2004, Romania joined NATO. In 2007, it became a member of the European Union. The country continues to move forward from its tumultuous departure from Communism.
