As of the 2021 census, the city had 250,849 inhabitants. The larger metropolitan area holds approximately 400,000 people. This metropolitan area is significant because it concentrates over 70% of the population from both Timiș and Arad counties.

The city is defined by its deep multiculturalism. It is home to 21 different ethnic groups and 18 religious denominations. Historically, the most numerous groups were Swabian Germans, Jews, and Hungarians. These groups still represent about 6% of the current population.

This diversity has shaped the city's identity over many centuries. Timișoara is often called the "Little Vienna" or the "City of Roses."

It is also known for its 36 parks and green spaces.

The history of the region began in the Pannonian Basin. This area was very fertile as early as 4000 BC. Early populations included farmers, hunters, and artisans. The Dacians were the first identifiable civilization in Banat. Some historians believe Timișoara sits where the Dacian settlement of Zurobara once was.

In the Middle Ages, the city was a strategic location for controlling the Banat plain. It was officially mentioned in 1212 as the Roman castrum Temesiensis. Later, King Charles I of Hungary strengthened the fortress with stone walls. He even moved the royal seat to Timișoara between 1316 and 1323.

Timișoara underwent significant shifts in power during the Ottoman era. The Ottoman Turks conquered the city in 1552. They turned it into a provincial capital known as the Temeşvar Eyalet.

During this 164-year period, the city became an Ottoman fortification. It featured mosques, minarets, and Turkish baths. However, no buildings from this specific Ottoman period have survived today. The city changed again in 1716 when the Austrian army conquered it.

This conquest followed a 48-day siege led by Prince Eugene of Savoy.

Under Habsburg rule, the city underwent massive physical changes. The imperial authorities began a colonization process. They invited German Catholics, known as Banat Swabians, to settle in the area.

The city functioned primarily as a military fortress. To keep up with new military technology, the old fortifications were rebuilt. The new fortress used the Vauban style of design. This new structure was ten times larger than the previous medieval Turkish fortress.

Eventually, the military usefulness of the fortress declined. This led to the demolition of many bastions to make room for new boulevards.

Timișoara has a long history of being a leader in innovation. It was the first city in the Habsburg monarchy to have street lighting in 1760.

In 1884, it became the first European city to use electric street lamps. The city also built a municipal hospital 24 years before Vienna did. It published the first German newspaper in Southeast Europe in 1771. In the modern era, Timișoara became a vital part of the Romanian Revolution in December 1989.

This event marked a major turning point in the country's history.

Today, the city is a vital center for education, medicine, and technology. It hosts six universities with about 40,000 students enrolled.

The city is a provider of medical tourism, specifically for cosmetic surgery and dental care. It has seen medical breakthroughs like the first stem cell transplant and the first in vitro fertilization (IVF). In the technology sector, it is one of Romania's most powerful IT hubs. In 2013, Timișoara recorded the fastest internet download speed in the world. It also held the title of European Capital of Culture in 2023.
