The Warsaw Pact was a very important military group.

It was also known as the Warsaw Treaty Organization. This group was a collective defense treaty. This means the member countries promised to protect each other. It was formed to act as a balance of power. It was meant to be a counterweight to NATO. NATO was a different military group for Western countries.

The two groups did not fight each other directly. Instead, they competed through different ideas and proxy wars.

This group worked as a military alliance. It was the military side of a larger system. The economic side was called Comecon. The Soviet Union was the most powerful leader in the pact. It held much control over the other member states. Moscow led the Communist parties in these different lands. Many of these countries followed orders from the Kremlin. The Soviet Union even used its power to keep control. For example, Soviet forces entered Hungary in November 1956.

The history of the pact began in the mid-1950s. It was created because of changes in West Germany. West Germany joined NATO in early May 1955. This made the Soviet Union very worried. They feared a rearmed Germany could be a threat. Because of this, they formed their own group. The treaty was signed in Warsaw, Poland.

The signing happened on May 14, 1955. This took place at the Presidential Palace.

Many countries were part of this alliance. The Soviet Union joined with seven other nations. These included Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania.

Not everyone stayed in the group forever. Albania withdrew from the pact in 1968. In August 1968, the pact had a large military engagement. This was an invasion of Czechoslovakia. This was one of its own member states. This event showed how the group functioned.

The pact began to fall apart in the late 1980s. This happened because of the Revolutions of 1989. One big change started with the Solidarity movement in Poland. The movement had electoral success in June 1989. Another event was the Pan-European Picnic in August 1989.

East Germany left the pact after German reunification in 1990. Finally, the pact ended in February 1991. Six remaining members met in Hungary to end it. Most of these countries later joined NATO.
