This group existed during the Cold War from 1947 to 1991. These countries followed an idea called Marxism–Leninism. They also used different forms of socialism. This way of life was the opposite of the Western Bloc.

Some people called this group the "Second World." The Western Bloc was known as the "First World." Countries that did not pick a side were called the "Third World."

Many different lands joined this group over time.

In Europe, the group included the Soviet Union and several neighbors. These neighbors were East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania. In Asia, the group included Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Kampuchea, North Korea, and China. Some nations in Africa and Latin America also joined.

Cuba joined the group in 1961. For a short time, Nicaragua and Grenada were also part of it.

The history of this group began with changes in borders.

In 1939, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany made a pact. This agreement divided parts of Europe into two different areas. The Soviet Union moved into parts of eastern Poland. They also moved into the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

In 1940, the Soviet Union added these three countries to its own land. This was a very big change for the people living there.

There were many specific names for this group of nations.
